How to Make Home Made Gim Gui

You can customize these snacks when you make them by adding in some additional spices or using flavored oils. Be creative!

TIP: When you open up your package of seaweed keep the little silica packages. These are used to keep the seaweed dry and fresh. When you store your home made gim gui toss in these little packets to keep it fresh.

Ingredients:

  • Sesame oil
  • Canola oil
  • Salt
  • Package of seaweed (same squared that are used for sushi)
  • Measuring spoons
  • Spatula
  • Basting Brush
  • Bowls
  • Frying Pan or grill.
  • Paper towel

A Few Pointers When It Comes Time To Roast

Once you have the sheets seasoned it is a fast process. If you keep the seaweed on the heat too long they burn pretty easily. Here’s a few things to keep in mind:

  • Square pans or a grill work best.
  • Have all your ingredients within arms reach.

When I went to make this for the first time I came across an awesome video that shows how to make this from Maangchi. She explains it so well in video if text is not your thing.

Ingredients

  • Sesame oil
  • Canola oil
  • Salt
  • Package of seaweed (same squared that are used for sushi)
  • Measuring spoons
  • Spatula
  • Basting Brush
  • Bowls
  • Frying Pan or grill.
  • Paper towel

Instructions

  1. Fill one bowl with your oil. You want to make a mixture to your taste - I find a 1:1 ratio works best, that half sesame oil and half canola gives a great flavour.
  2. Fill a second bowl with salt.
  3. Place down a piece of paper towel.
  4. Place your first piece of seaweed (gim) on the paper towel with the shiny side up.
  5. Brush on a thin layer of your oil mixture.
  6. Sprinkle on some salt (the amount is your preference).
  7. Repeat this process for each sheet, placing onto of the last (shiny side up).
  8. Heat up your pan or grill to a medium heat (around 350 degrees C).
  9. Place your first sheet of gim in the pan, shiny side up. Press down on the sheet for about 15 seconds.
  10. Place a second sheet on top - this time with the rough side up. Flip it over. Then place another sheet, rough side up. Press down for 15 seconds.
  11. Repeat this process for the rest of your sheets.
  12. Once they are all roasted place them on a paper towel to cool a bit.
  13. Once cool, grab a pair of scissors and cut them into small squares.
